Embracing Inclusive Cataloging to Represent Students' Intersectionality

Many school librarians are grappling with the racist history of the Dewey Decimal System and wondering how to respond. MMSD has started work towards inclusive cataloging, which results in respectful representation of our student population. Inclusive cataloging not only better reflects our student’s identities, but also improves accessibility as students find resources classified using terminology that aligns with their own thinking. In undertaking this work, participants will grow professionally and strengthen partnerships within their learning communities. Participants will come away with a host of resources, ideas for an action plan, and a network of support for launching inclusive cataloging projects. Workshop participants will engage in interactive, supportive conversations around the challenges of unique cataloging for individual institutions.
