It is important to instill in students a curiosity about the world around them, along with a strong sense of their place in the world. In this session, we will explore strategies that will allow educators to embrace culturally responsive practices that meet the social and academic needs of diverse student populations, and encourage student discussion on current events and how they relate to events in state and local history. We will drive inquiry through the use of guiding questions, print and digital resources, and encouraging students to develop social awareness, self-awareness and responsible decision making skills as they reflect on how their personal experiences relate to global issues. Finally, we’ll discuss fostering an environment that encourages students to take informed action as it relates to state and local history, people, events and topics.
